- Syahmi Rizq Bin Senawing of SMK Abaka Tawau, Sabah secured a fourth straight Allianz Junior Badminton Championship (AJBC) Grand Finals appearance after dominating the Boys’ Under-15 category at the AJBC 2026 Qualifying Round 7 which concluded in Sandakan recently.
- The 15-year-old, who has consistently advanced to the Grand Finals each year since 2023, claimed the Singles title in the Sabah Qualifying Round as well as the Doubles crown with Mohd Rafiq Bin Alim Bakri from SMK Merotai Besar, Tawau, Sabah.
- While Syahmi Rizq was delighted with his performance and achievements, he is determined to top the podium at the Grand Finals this year.
- “I have made the Grand Finals three times previously but never won the top prize,” he said. “I finished in third spot twice (2024 and 2025) in the doubles, so I really want to show that I’m more than a champion in my own state.”
- For Syahmi Rizq, his personal target this year is to end his run in the AJBC on a high. At the Kota Kinabalu Qualifying Round in 2023, the young shuttler placed second in the Boys’ Under-13 Singles and won the Boys’ Under-13 Doubles but did not make it past the group stage at the Grand Finals. In 2024, he won third place in the Qualifying Round Doubles event but was again unable to advance beyond the Grand Finals group stage.
- At last year’s Grand Finals, he grabbed the Doubles bronze medal again. “The competition in Sabah is tough but at the Grand Finals, it is a whole lot tougher. That’s because we are playing against the best in the country.”
In the Girls’ Under-13 categories, Wisyah Zahrah Zuyyin Binti Nurfadli from SJK(C) Chung Hwa in Kota Kinabalu also scored a double win after sweeping the Singles and Doubles titles, the latter with partner Izz Hadirah Binti Mohd Rushdi from Saint Anthony in Tenom.- The fifth edition of the AJBC is organised by Allianz Malaysia Berhad and supported by the Badminton Association of Malaysia and the Sports, Co-curricular and Arts Division, Ministry of Education.
- In just five years, the AJBC, which does not require any entrance fees from the players, is among the most popular and anticipated junior events in the country. This year’s AJBC features a total of 10 Qualifying Rounds followed by the Grand Finals in Kuala Lumpur.
- The list of winners from the AJBC 2026 Qualifying Round 6 is attached.
