The Article

Ismail Azmi is a Person with Disabilities (PWDs) and an Allianz General Insurance Company (Malaysia) Berhad agent.

It was 2009, the eve of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Ismail was driving along the East Coast Expressway with his seven-month pregnant wife Akma Ghazali when he dozed off and hit a tree at the Kijal exit. Akma was flung out of the car, but went on to safely deliver their son Muhammad Danial, now seven. Ismail, who wasn’t wearing his seatbelt, suffered a spinal cord injury and was left paralysed from the waist down.

The former offshore engineer turned to insurance as a means to earn a living. He took over a pre-existing insurance office and built his business from scratch as the previous owner had ran it to the ground.  Ismail knuckled down and used his own life experience whilst offering simply the best value for his customers.

“When I had my accident, Akma and I had only married for less than a year and we had a newborn. Going through my insurance claim was a journey through hell because I knew nothing about my coverage and what I could claim on. It was a sharp learning curve for my wife and I,” said Ismail.

“People often forget that insurance is a service and I never want my clients to experience what I did. That’s why I take the time to explain their policies, even when they say, it’s okay and that they trust me. I will explain to them every detail because I want them be well-informed and to make wise decisions.  I believe quality in service is not about what I give the customer, but what the customer gets out from me,” added Ismail.

The 33-year-old had a long and arduous road for the past eight years, earning just RM400 in his first month as an agent. In his first year, Ismail managed just 70 cases but steadily grew it to 350 cases a month.

“All my effort is for my wife and son. I want them to have a comfortable life and if there is anyone out there that thinks their life is in a rut, that it is impossible to bounce back, I want to tell them: the only thing stopping you is yourself. There will be hard days, dark days, but nothing is impossible. You just have to keep knocking down that door,” said Ismail.

Kuantan Branch Manager Sheena Chua who visited him to present him with a new laptop said : “I’ve never seen a person as hardworking as Ismail. He and his wife are truly an inspirational couple - the teamwork and synergy they display is amazing. I feel truly blessed to have an agent of his caliber and just a strong, inspiring person.  I hope he encourages people out there to dare to live their life to the fullest.”

Ismail’s future plans include expanding his business by opening up a new office in Kuala Terengganu.
