The Article

Fifty-nine Allianz Malaysia employees rolled up their sleeves to volunteer at the Pertubuhan Tindakan Wanita Islam (PERTIWI) Soup Kitchen on 1 March 2017.

The volunteers served nutritious dinner meals and beverages sponsored by Allianz Malaysia to the homeless and hardcore poor at the Medan Tuanku area. PERTIWI Soup Kitchen serves approximately 700 people daily, and the initiative by Allianz Malaysia is the first of six sessions the Company has planned out for the year.

“Most soup kitchens rely on volunteers to run and as an organisation with the resources, we realised that this was an opportunity for us to contribute and serve the underprivileged community. We have many employees who have the desire to serve, but they do not know how and where to start. So we hope that through these initiatives, we can provide them with a platform to volunteer and continue reaching out to the underserved community and do something good for them,” said Ng Siew Gek, Head of Allianz4Good, Allianz Malaysia.

Allianz Malaysia’s affiliation with PERTIWI began last November after the company donated a Nissan Navara four-wheel drive pickup truck to the PERTIWI Health Services’ volunteer doctors. These doctors provide basic medical services to the homeless and hardcore poor community. Following the handover ceremony, Allianz Malaysia and Allianz General Insurance Company (Malaysia) Berhad Chief Executive Officer Zakri Khir and Allianz Life Insurance Malaysia Berhad Chief Executive Officer Joseph Gross along with the employees spent time volunteering at the soup kitchen.

PERTIWI is an organisation that is dedicated towards addressing the welfare and needs of marginalised groups in Malaysia. Among PERTIWI's social missions and welfare activities is their mobile soup kitchen project which began in 2010. The soup kitchen provides free meals and other forms of assistance to the homeless and hard-core poor people in various locations around Kuala Lumpur, whereas PERTIWI Health Services provides basic medical service for the benefit of the poor.
