The Article

As one of the leading Motor insurers in Malaysia, Allianz Malaysia’s general insurance subsidiary; Allianz General Insurance Company (Malaysia) Berhad (“Allianz General”) is committed to increasing awareness on road safety among Malaysians.

“Every year, there are 1.24 million deaths on the roads worldwide while road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death among young people between 15 and 29 years1. In Malaysia, from January 2014 up to September 2014, 5,138 road fatalities and 357,292 road accidents were recorded2. With these alarming statistics, we see the importance of increasing the awareness of road safety among Malaysians,” said Ng Siew Gek, Allianz Malaysia’s Head of Allianz4Good.

Allianz Malaysia has been actively promoting road safety via its collaboration with Jabatan Keselamatan Jalan Raya Malaysia (“JKJR”) since July 2011, when a memorandum of understanding (“MOU”) was signed between Allianz General, and JKJR.  In 2014, Allianz and JKJR extended their partnership for a further three years.

“Since we began in 2011, a total of 103 Road Safety Advocacy Campaigns have been carried out nationwide with 440 employees trained by JKJR as Road Safety Ambassadors. We reached out to over 14,000 road users in 2014 alone through our various initiatives, such as road safety advocacy campaigns,” continued Ng.

At these campaigns, Allianz Malaysia, together with JKJR, distribute specially designed reflective stickers to increase the night visibility of motorcyclists. Allianz Malaysia also sponsors the exchange of unsafe helmets that are too old or not SIRIM-approved with SIRIM-approved ones and distributes child safety booster seats and windbreakers.

Besides these, Allianz Malaysia conducts road safety awareness campaigns and workshops for children. In 2014 alone, Road Safety awareness campaigns were conducted in three primary schools and two secondary schools.  To convey the importance of cultivating road safety habits at an early age, Allianz Malaysia launched its Road Safety Tips Booklet which aims to instil road safety awareness by serving as a reminder tool for children as well as a teaching tool for teachers and parents. To supplement the Booklet, 15 sets of Road Safety Tips Puzzles were given to schools as a teaching tool for the teachers to facilitate road safety lessons.

Allianz Malaysia also embarked on the Long Short Walk that focuses on pedestrian safety. The Long Short Walk – a World Walk for Road Safety - is an initiative of the Zenani Campaign. The Zenani Campaign has been launched in the name and memory of Zenani Mandela, as an awareness raising initiative in support of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 by the Mandela family, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Make Roads Safe campaign and the Road Safety Fund. It constitutes lots of short walks that combine into one Long Walk: a call for action for safe walking.

“We believe that road safety is not just important for motorists, but pedestrians as well. Safe walking should be a basic right and we support the call for safer roads for all. The Walk aims to promote safe walking and at the same time raises awareness on safety for pedestrians.” concluded Ng.

These are just some of the initiatives that Allianz Malaysia has embarked on to create road safety awareness among the general public including children. Allianz Malaysia hopes that through its partnership with JKJR, it can play a pivotal role in reducing the road fatality rate in Malaysia.

Globally, Allianz partners with the FIA Foundation’s Road Safety Fund in support of the UN “Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020” under the mission “Drive Safely”.
