Allianz Malaysia held nationwide ’Balik Kampung’ road safety advocacy campaigns together with Jabatan Keselamatan Jalan Raya Malaysia (JKJR) in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya celebration. The campaign started on 28 June 2016 at five different locations simultaneously at Jalan Lencongan Barat (nearby Bandar Laguna Merbok) in Sungai Petani, Jalan Padang Tembak in Kota Bharu, Bukit Telekom in Dungun, KM 11 Jalan Kluang in Batu Pahat and Jalan Tun Mustapha, KM 6 in Labuan, followed by a campaign in Jalan Permatang Rawa in Bukit Mertajam today.

Allianz Malaysia is also supporting JKJR in their National Road Safety Campaign for Hari Raya celebrations launching held at Plaza Tol Sungai Besi in Kuala Lumpur (towards southern) on 27 June 2016, Sunway Putra Mall Jalan Putra in Kuala Lumpur today and Wardieburn Camp in Kuala Lumpur on 1 July 2016.

The ‘Balik Kampung’ campaigns aim to instil road safety awareness among the public as they travel to their respective hometowns to celebrate the occasion with their family and friends.

CEO of Allianz Malaysia Berhad, Zakri Khir said road safety advocacy campaigns held during festive seasons were an added road safety initiative to the usual road safety advocacy campaigns held by Allianz Malaysia as more people traversed the highways during such periods.

“With more vehicles on the roads, the likelihood of accidents also increases and we want to remind the public to travel safely and reach their destinations safely as festivals are when families look forward to being with their loved ones. It should be a happy occasion for everyone,” he said.

At the road safety advocacy campaigns, a total of 1,400 specially designed reflective stickers were distributed to motorcyclists during the campaign. These reflective stickers are able to increase the night visibility of motorcyclists. Allianz Malaysia also sponsored the exchange of 250 unsafe helmets that were too old or not SIRIM-approved with SIRIM-approved ones In addition, 112 child helmets were also distributed during the campaign. It has been proven that the proper use of helmets can reduce the risk of death in an accident by nearly 40 percent.

Allianz Malaysia also distributed 140 reflective windbreakers to the motorcyclists during the campaign. Allianz Malaysia hopes that the use of reflective windbreaker will help to reduce road accidents rate by motorcyclist due to poor visibility.

Additionally, 140 car seatbelt shoulder pads with the messages “Drive Safely” and “Buckle Up” were given away to motorists at these campaigns.  The car seatbelt shoulder pad provides comfort to the user by relieving stress and chafing from the seatbelt strap, thus encouraging drivers and passengers to put on their seatbelts while in the car. It also reduces the risk of seatbelt cut injury during a crash. 

A total of 160 Child Safety Booster Seats were also distributed to motorists with young children. The Child Safety Booster Seat is designed as a child restraint to enable children to use the passenger vehicle 3-point seat belt by boosting their sitting height so that the sash part of the seat belt passes their shoulder, across the chest and the lap part of the seat belt is worn low on the child’s lap. 

Allianz Malaysia’s collaboration with JKJR began on 18 July 2011 when a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between its general insurance arm, Allianz General and JKJR. Allianz Malaysia has been actively promoting road safety via its collaboration with JKJR and has carried out 139 Road Safety Advocacy Campaigns nationwide with more than 440 employees trained by JKJR as Road Safety Ambassadors.

The road safety advocacy campaigns are conducted with particular emphasis on motorcyclists’ safety. Motorcyclists have the highest road fatality rate in Malaysia.

Allianz Malaysia hopes that through its partnership with JKJR, it can play a role in helping JKJR to reducing the road fatality rate in Malaysia. 

“Reducing risks is the core of Allianz’s business as an insurance company. Being one of the top motor insurers in the local market, we believe it is important for us to educate the public about road safety and play a role in creating safety awareness,” said Zakri.

Allianz Malaysia’s road safety initiatives in 2016 include plans to organise road safety advocacy campaigns in schools, accident prone areas as well as during major festivals to create road safety awareness among members of the public.

Globally, Allianz partners with the FIA Foundation’s Road Safety Fund in support of the UN “Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020” under the mission “Drive Safely”.
