Penangite Osman Md. Rasid lives in a condo. He never thought his cars would be in need of flood cover.
However, heavy downpour on Saturday morning led to flash floods in island state last week.
Previously a mild flooding area, water levels around his home in Jalan P.Ramlee rose close to two feet, submerging the engines of his Toyota Wish and Mini Cooper.
"It all happened so quickly. I was out with my friend in the morning and when I came home at 5pm, the whole area was flooded. We usually see about three to four inches of water when there is heavy rain, but this is almost two feet of water. My heart literally sank," said Osman.
An agent with Allianz General Insurance Company (Malaysia) Berhad for 15 years, Osman said the first time he bought flood cover as part of his motor insurance cover in 2015 after seeing the rapid occurrence of flash floods in Penang.
"When I approach clients for motor insurance, they almost always tell me a budget they are willing to spend or claims that their area is highly unlikely to experience flood and most of the times, they would skip on flood cover," said Osman who only insured one of his car against flood.
"I can't fault them. I was also in the same frame of mind thinking natural disasters won't happen to me. But I know better now.
"My advice to vehicle owners out there, no matter what you drive, don't skimp on flood cover. The proof is in our unpredictable climate. Flood cover is no longer an option, it's a necessity." he added.
Allianz General's motor insurance comes with a 50 percent reduced rate on special perils which include natural disasters such as flood, typhoon, hurricane, landslide and other convulsions of nature.
And to aid customers who are affected by the floods in Penang, Allianz has also mobilised its Claims Caravan to expedite claims.
All Allianz home insurance policyholders whose homes have been affected by the flood are able to file their claims at the caravan. The Company would then assign an adjuster to survey the said property.
Eligible motor insurance policyholders will also be able to lodge their claims at the caravan.
Besides that, all Allianz customers who lodge flood claims at the caravan will also receive a waterproof survival kit, complete with blanket, towels, first aid kit and torch light.
